Carefree launches hard-hitting films highlighting the lifeline respite breaks give unpaid carers
Transformative Breaks for Carers: How Carefree is Making a Difference
Carefree, an award-winning tech charity, is continuing its mission to uplift the lives of unpaid carers across the UK with the launch of five compelling case study films. These films, set to be rolled out across social media platforms, shed light on the tangible, life-enhancing effects that breaks from caregiving have on mental and physical well-being.
A Lifeline for the UK’s Unpaid Carers
The numbers speak for themselves: there are an estimated 5.7 million unpaid carers in the UK, comprising about 9% of the population. Shockingly, 68% of these carers report not being able to take a break when needed. Carefree's innovative model tackles this challenge head-on by repurposing unsold hotel rooms, transforming them into short, restorative breaks for carers. Partnering with leading hotel chains, the charity has already provided over 10,000 carers with respite and aims to double this support by 2025.
Real Stories, Real Impact
The newly released case studies give voice to carers from diverse backgrounds and with unique caregiving experiences:
Alison, 60, London – Caring for her son with serious mental health challenges.
Casey, 24, Nottingham – Balancing life while caring for his ill mother and older brother with severe learning difficulties.
Kauser, 62, Leeds – Providing round-the-clock care for her two brothers, who face a mix of learning difficulties and epilepsy.
Michael, 78, Bolton – Devoted to his wife who battles MS.
Seirian, 42, Sheffield – Committed to caring for her son with Down Syndrome.
These stories highlight not only the emotional and financial strains faced by carers but also the revitalizing power of taking a break, which enhances their capacity to continue supporting their loved ones.
The Voice of Leadership
Charlotte Newman, CEO of Carefree, emphasized the organization’s commitment to extending support to more carers:
“The launch of our emotive case studies is just one step towards raising awareness and inspiring more people to join this vital cause. As we look ahead, we're committed to expanding our reach and developing new ways to support carers' wellbeing.”
The broader aim, as voiced by Charlie Ricketts, Chair of Trustees, is to build a sustainable network powered by technology and partnerships:
“The future of carer support lies in harnessing the power of technology and community collaboration... By leveraging technology and partnerships, we can create a caring economy that recognizes and supports these unsung heroes of our healthcare system.”
Anael Peu, Senior Partner at Axiom Hospitality, noted the partnership’s impact:
“Working with Carefree makes it easy for us to reach deserving carers and give them a truly memorable stay in rooms that would otherwise be left unoccupied.”
A Vision for the Future
Unpaid carers contribute a staggering £162bn annually to the economy—almost equivalent to funding a second NHS. Yet, many do so at the expense of their health and well-being. Carefree’s mission underscores the need for innovative solutions to support this invaluable sector of society, turning untapped resources into restorative opportunities that empower carers to continue their critical roles.
With ongoing support from communities, hotel groups, and charitable partnerships, Carefree is paving the way to ensure carers are seen, supported, and sustained through simple yet powerful breaks.
